Congratulations on your decision
to share a swimming pool with your family and friends.
Since your new pool will be the
centre of your exciting new outdoors life, you'll want to spend
a few minutes selecting a pool shape and size that will make
the most of your leisure environment.
Read through the notes here and then let yourself go.... imagine
your family enjoying a swimming pool in just a few days.
The first thing to do is to get a diagraming sheet - one that's
marked off in 1/8" grids. Each square represents one foot,
the same scale as the pool shapes found below.
DRAWING YOUR HOUSE
Draw your house and property lines. Be sure to use the correct
scale. Next, you decide where to place your sparkling new pool.
If you have a set of blueprints for your house, it can be a big
help when it comes time to fill out the forms necessary for building
permits. You don't need to draw the entire house - just the are
where your new pool will be.
LOCATING YOUR SWIMMING
POOL
Once you've got a clear picture of what your yard is like, you'll
be able to decide on the best spot for your pool, and whether
there are any wires or pipes you want to have moved. Since a
pool is an extension of your home, it should be placed as close
as possible to the back door that is handy to food, beverages,
and changing areas.
You won't want to have your pool any closer than 10 feet to electric
lines, nor under a tree where you'll miss out on the sun. Some
communities don't allow you to build within a certain number
of feet from your property line, so you'll want to check on that.
SELECTING THE SHAPE
Deciding which shape will do the most for your yard isn't really
hard at all. Simply slide the pool shapes under your drawing
until one fits the space you have. Then lightly trace it. Allow
for at least a three foot apron around the pool. Just for fun,
pick another shape or size. and see if you can fit more water
recreation into your yard. A slightly larger pool will naturally
offer more space for swimming and diving.
SELECTING POOL ACCESSORIES
You may want to have a barbecue installed. So mark it on the
diagram. Go ahead and draw in your walk in step, ladders, and
lighting that will add so much enjoyment to your swimming pool.
Finally, you and your swimming pool representative will want
to discuss the drawing in detail to be sure you're all set.
